Rachel – Day 21

25 Feb

The News: Poor Bald Chickens. Because of chicken’s living conditions, a large number of them end up going bald of their feathers. Battery chickens are used to produce eggs and once they stop producing very many eggs, they get sent to the slaughter house. An organization called “Little Hen Rescue” re-homes chickens for pets so they don’t get slaughtered.  A craft club decided to clothe these bald chickens during the phase of feather re-growth. The crafting club called, Somerset craft club has been knitting sweaters for these chickens during the typical 6-week phase before their feathers grow back after being in such harsh conditions.

My Comments: I have to admit that I laughed out loud a little when I read this article and saw the video of these bald chickens wearing sweaters (click on this link to watch short video: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/8536576.stm ). However, I have been learning so much this past year about the food we eat and the terrible tortures animals go through in order for us to keep eating them (much to our health detriment come to find out). If you want to know what I’m referring to, then watch an amazing documentary called “Food Inc.” Anyways, all that to say, I’m kinda impressed with this craft group because they are giving a damn about the food they eat. Even though I’d prefer this craft group try to stop the mass factories and conditions that get these hens in this state of baldness to begin with, I think it’s a good first step to take care of them in a “rehab” sort of sense after they are kicked out of producing eggs. Kudos to crafters!
