Rachel – Day 28

The News: Vaccine Fights Brain Cancer. Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center has developed and been administering a vaccine that focuses on killing cells in tumors of the brain. The vaccine called CDX-110, doesn’t attack all your other cells as does chemotherapy or radiation, so it is safer for the rest of your body. It’s a very painful shot taken once a month and has been proven to extend the life of the patient by several years, up to 6 in some cases (where most would die within or shortly after one year without the vaccine).

My Comments: Amazing! Science and medicine is pulling through again! The link above shows a video of a woman named Karen who suffers from a brain tumor that has significantly decreased after a year of shots and she is still fully functioning. Unfortunately, this vaccine only targets a certain tumor containing a certain protein, but at least there’s hope for those who have that particular protein, which I believe is around 40% of brain tumor patients. Perhaps the development of this vaccine will lead to further cancer-treating vaccines that target only the tumor and leave all the other cells healthy. I think we’re getting somewhere with this one.

That’s awesome! I would even take the vaccine if it meant even one more day with my family! Gigi
